On the Liturgy
- The Great Vigil is the first liturgy of Easter Day. It may be celebrated at any time between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter morning. It is now commonly celebrated at 8 or 8:30 PM on Saturday (after sunset). It is appropriate that the service begin in darkness.
- This liturgy draws together elements from the Western and Eastern liturgies for the Great Vigil of Easter. For a traditional Western vigil, see the Book of Common Prayer (2019) or the Roman Missal. For a traditional Eastern vigil, see the Paschal Service.
- This liturgy requires a Paschal Candle, Paschal Candlestick, and (as with a Christmas Eve candlelight service) candles for all in attendance. For churches unaccustomed to the language of “vigil,” this service may also be referred to as an “Easter Candlelight Service.”
- The liturgy consists of four parts: (1) The Service of Light; (2) The Service of Lessons; (3) The Service of Holy Baptism; and (4) The Service of Holy Eucharist.
- During the Service of Light, a “new fire” is kindled (e.g., a campfire outside the entrance to the church), and from it the Paschal Candle is lit, symbolizing Christ, the light of the world. The Exsultet, an ancient song of praise, is sung or said as the climax of this part of the liturgy.
- During the Service of Lessons, key passages from Scripture (always the Red Sea deliverance from Exodus) recount the history of God’s mighty acts and promises. These readings are accompanied by psalms, canticles, and prayers.
- During the Service of Holy Baptism, candidates are united to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3–4), which the Church celebrates on this most holy night. If there are no candidates for Baptism, the Congregation joins in a Renewal of Baptismal Vows.
- Finally, the Service of Holy Eucharist is the proper culmination of the Easter Liturgy. As we keep this holy feast, we share the joy of our Savior’s triumph and are strengthened by his grace to walk in newness of life.

Part I: The Service of Light
The congregation stands together in the dark outside the church. Candles are distributed to everyone, but they are not yet lit. A blazing fire is dramatically lit (e.g., a match is thrown into a campfire pit with gas-soaked wood or into a Weber kettle full of kindling wood). Then the Minister says the introduction below.
INTRODUCTION
Brothers and sisters, on this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.

Let us pray.
Eternal God, who made this most holy night to shine with the brightness of your one true light: sanctify this new fire, we pray, and so set us aflame with the fire of your love, that with pure hearts and kindled affections we may attain to the radiance of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Minister or a Deacon lights the Paschal Candle from the newly kindled fire, and says,
May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.
The Minister, bearing the Candle, leads the procession to the front of the church, pausing three times and singing or saying,
The light of Christ.

The Minister then stands at the front of the church with the Paschal Candle and the people pass by, each lighting their candles from the Paschal Candle, then taking their place in the pews or seats. When all have lit their candles, the Paschal Candle is placed in its stand. Note: Other candles may be lit in the church, and reading lights may be used at the pulpit and lectern, but the candles on the Lord’s Table are not lit until later in the service.
THE EXSULTET
Then the Minister (or someone else appointed to do so) stands near the Candle and sings the Exsultet (see sheet music from the ACNA Altar Book).
Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels,
and let your trumpets shout Salvation
for the victory of our mighty King.

This is the night when with a pillar of fire you banished the darkness of our iniquity.
This is the night when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life.
This is the night when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.
Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed.
How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving kindness to us, that to redeem a slave, you gave a Son.
O wonderful providence of Adam’s sin destroyed completely by the death of Christ. O happy fault, which gained for us so great and glorious a Redeemer.
This is the night of which it is written: the night shall be as bright as the day.
How holy is this night when wickedness is put to flight, and sin is washed away. It restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn. It casts out pride and hatred, and brings peace and concord.
How blessed is this night when earth and heaven are joined, and Man is reconciled to God.
Therefore, O holy Father, accept our evening sacrifice, the offering of this candle in your honor, the work of bees and of your servants’ hands, the gift of your most holy Church. May it mingle with the lights of heaven, and shine continually to drive away all darkness. May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning—he who gives his light to all creation, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

PREFACE TO THE SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, remembering how he saved his people in ages past and in the fullness of time sent his Son to be our Redeemer; and let us pray that God may bring to completion in each of us the saving work he has begun.

THE SERMON
The Minister then preaches a short sermon (see, for example, the Paschal Homily of John Chrysostom below).
If anyone is devout and loves God, let them enjoy this fair and radiant triumphal feast. If anyone is a wise servant, let them rejoicing enter into the joy of their Lord. If any have labored long in fasting, let them now receive their reward. If any have worked from the first hour, let them today receive their just reward. If any have come at the third hour, let them with thankfulness keep the feast. If any have arrived at the sixth hour, let them have no misgivings; because he shall in nowise be deprived thereof. If any have delayed until the ninth hour, let them draw near, fearing nothing. If any have tarried even until the eleventh hour, let them, also, be not alarmed at their tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his honor, will accept the last even as the first; He gives rest unto those who come at the eleventh hour, even as unto him who has worked from the first hour.
And He shows mercy upon the last, and cares for the first; and to the one He gives, and upon the other He bestows gifts. And He both accepts the deeds, and welcomes the intention, and honors the acts and praises the offering. Part III: The Service of Holy Baptism
BAPTISM OR RENEWAL OF BAPTISM VOWS
Holy Baptism may be administered at this time. If there is no one to be baptized, then the Minister leads the congregation in the renewal of the baptism vows (below). Even if no one is baptized, the font may be filled with water as a visible reminder of baptism.
Brothers and sisters, through the Paschal Mystery, we have been buried with Christ in Baptism, so that we may walk with him in newness of life. And so, now that our Lenten observance is concluded, let us renew the promises of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and his works and promised to serve God in the holy catholic Church. And so I ask you:
Do you renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the sinful desires of the flesh, so that you will not follow nor be led by them?
I renounce them all.
Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth?
I believe.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: that he was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, died, and was buried: that he descended to the dead: And on the third day he rose again from the dead: And that he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father: And from there will come to judge the living and the dead?

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Part IV: The Service of the Lord’s Supper
THE SANCTUS
O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, it is very fitting, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto you. But chiefly we are bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, for he is the very Paschal Lamb which was offered for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death, he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again, he has restored to us everlasting life.
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and saying,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord most high. Amen.
THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
The congregation may be reminded to keep their eyes open for this prayer, which contains the words of institution that must never be omitted.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father; of your tender mercy, you gave your only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. By once offering himself there, he made a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, offering, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world.
So now, most merciful Father, we humbly ask you to bless and sanctify, with your Word and Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine; and grant that we may receive them according to the holy institution of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, in remembrance of his death and passion, and be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.
In the same night that he was betrayed, he took* bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake* it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this* is my Body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
Likewise after Supper he took* the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink you all of this; for this* is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this as often as you shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died;
Christ is risen;
Christ will come again.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Let us pray.
Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRATION
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
Have mercy on us, and grant us your peace.
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast.
The gifts of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!
The Ministers receive the Bread and Cup, and then deliver it to the people, saying,
The body of our Lord Jesus Christ, [which was given for you, preserve your body and soul unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your heart by faith, with thanksgiving.]
The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, [which was shed for you, preserve your body and soul unto everlasting life. Drink this in remembrance that Christ’s blood was shed for you, and be thankful.]
Or, the Minister may say,
The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven.
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation.
If the consecrated bread or wine is consumed before all have communed, the Minister consecrates more, repeating the Prayer of Consecration. When all have communed, the Minister covers what remains of the consecrated elements with a fair linen cloth.

THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Let us pray.
O Lord, pour out on us the Spirit of your love, and in your kindness make those you have nourished by this paschal Sacrament one in mind and heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE BLESSING
The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
THE SENDING
