The Examen is a prayerful way to examine one’s heart and life, and to actively pursue deeper sanctification. It is commonly used at the end of the day (e.g., before Compline). If possible, find a quiet and comfortable place where you can be alone without distractions. Close your eyes and take several deep breaths. Remember that you are in the presence of God.
- Gratitude. Give thanks for the gift of the day and for the spiritual benefits which you received or enjoyed.
- Petition for Light. Ask for grace to see yourself and your day as God does.
- Review. Think through the details of the day, relying on the Holy Spirit to show you any compulsive habits, pervasive attitudes, or behavioral patterns that hinder your spiritual health. Where do you experience the most brokenness in your relationship with God, yourself, and others? Where do you most need God’s healing mercy? If you keep a journal, write down your answers.
- Confession. Confess your faults and ask God to pardon you. You may place your hand over your heart as you pray a prayer of repentance.
- Resolve. Identify a single fault or habit that you resolve to correct by God’s grace. How can your resolve be strengthened?
