Each week at our church, we often sing a hymn or other fitting song before partaking of the Lord’s Supper. I also play one or two fitting songs during the Distribution. Here are some of my favorites.
- Spotify Playlist: Holy Joys Communion
- Hymns for the Lord’s Supper by John & Charles Wesley — Holy Joys is in the (slow) process of identifying the meter for each hymn and pairing the words with a fitting and familiar hymn tune, but until we get this done, it is fairly easy to do it yourself.
- Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty — It is common to sing this after the Sanctus in the Service of the Lord’s Supper.
- Behold the Lamb (Communion Hymn), Gettys — We often sing this before the Lord’s Supper, or I play it in the background during the distribution. It is included in our hymns (Our Great Redeemer’s Praise from Seedbed)
- Keep the Feast, Skye Peterson & Ben Shive
- Mystery of Faith, Greg LaFollette (feat. Sarah Masen) — This is one of my favorites to play during the Distribution. This song is part of an awesome album “Songs for Common Prayer” that provides contemporary renditions of key passages from the Book of Common Prayer.
- Communion Song, Jonathan Stockstill (feat. Nicole Binion & BJ Putnam)
- Broken For Us, Katie Gustafson — see the whole album Songs for Communion
- Agnus Dei, Jen Reardon — “Agnus Dei” means “Lamb of God.” This is a beautiful song to play during the distribution, especially when communion is observed in more solemn or penitential seasons (Lent/Advent).
- More coming soon
