Not long ago I had a thought that arrested me. Let’s say that Mr. X is the most powerful person in the world. It is one thing for me to say that I am on the side of Mr. X. (Mr. X likely has no idea who I am, and I bring little to “his side.”
This statement simply gives the hearer an idea of where I stand on certain issues.) It is another thing entirely for me to make the audacious claim that, “Mr. X is on my side.” This implies a much more personal knowledge. It puts an incredible amount of power at my back.
And, if not true, it is certainly a presumptuous whopper of a lie. It is an outlandish claim if I don’t have something to back it up. It’s ludicrous…unless I really do know Mr. X, and he is actually “on my side.” I read one of those “crazy” claims recently: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.” (Ps. 118:6-7 ESV)
This psalmist makes the audacious assertion that the God of the universe is on his side. He makes it in a matter of fact way, like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Maybe you’ve read that all your life, but have you ever thought about how incredible it is to make that claim?
I grew up hearing these scriptures, but upon this reading it struck me anew what it really means, the depth of its import. If I am living righteously, if I belong to God, if I am endeavoring to walk in obedience, He is on my side!
The covenant keeping, eternal, all powerful God is on my side! And He’s on your side!! Is Satan giving you a run for your money today? Is he telling you that you really don’t matter, that God has much more important things on His agenda than your “little” problems? Are you facing situations that look completely insurmountable?
Remind yourself and your enemy that God is on your side today!! Walk in His strength! He has everything that you need for this moment and the next moment and the one after that. Walk ahead fearless, not because of what you bring to the table but because of Who is on your side!!
