Sing Psalm 80 in Metrical Form for Advent

|

This original metrical setting of Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19 is written to be sung during Advent to the tune VENI EMMANUEL (“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”). In the Revised Common Lectionary, Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19 is sung on the First Sunday of Advent (Year B) and the Fourth Sunday of Advent (Years A and C).

Hear, Shepherd of all Is-ra-el,
who leadest Joseph like a flock;
Enthroned upon the cherubim,
Shine forth and show yourself to him!

Refrain:
O God of hosts, restore us by your might,
Let your face shine and save us by your light!

How long will you despise our prayers?
How long will you let us despair?
Arise and wash away their sin—
Ephraim, Manasseh, Benjamin! [Refrain]

You’ve fed us tears instead of bread,
And made us drink what we have wept;
You’ve made our neighbors scorn your flock,
You’ve made the world around us mock! [Refrain]

But help the man of your right hand—
the Son of Man you have made strong;
Then by his strength we’ll never fall;
Give life and on your name we’ll call! [Refrain]
