Almighty God our Heavenly Father,
We are grieved over the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. Heal him, and spare the lives of all who were injured. Comfort the families who lost loved ones in the shooting. Thwart the plans of all evildoers. Hurry to help our broken and divided nation.
O Lord, make speed to save us;
O God, make haste to help us.
We lament the fear, anger, and division that has consumed our political landscape for so long.
Lord, have mercy.
We lament that political outrage in America has escalated to violence, from January 6th to July 13th.
Lord, have mercy.
We lament that our country has fallen so far from your standard of righteousness, justice, and peace.
Lord, have mercy.
We lament that we live in a fallen world in which all nations are corrupt in your sight and filled with violence (Gen. 6:11).
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. (Kyrie eleison)
Save us from the sin of seeking vengeance, for “Vengeance is mine,” says the Lord, “I will repay” (Rom. 12:19).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from being consumed and blinded by anger, “for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:20).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from the foolishness of trying to bring your kingdom through violence, like Peter who took up his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant (John 18:10).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from fighting worldly battles in worldly ways, for “the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:4).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from placing our hope and trust in earthly political leaders, “in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation” (Ps. 146:3).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from grasping at political power at the expense of our integrity and witness to the world.
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from running after conspiracy theories that appeal to our human desire for understanding and control, but leave your care and sovereignty out of the equation.
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from being more consumed with what the world is coming to than with Who has come into the world, lest our neighbors cease to be surprised by the hope that is in us (1 Pet. 3:15).
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from the sin of dehumanizing and thinking the worst of those who disagree with us.
Save us, O Lord.
Save us from all pride, vanity, hypocrisy, envy, hatred, and malice, and all uncharitableness. (BCP)
Save us, O Lord.
Let us pray.
ALL: Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
You are the King of glory, O Christ;
You are the everlasting Son of the Father. (BCP)
We believe that you shall come again to judge the living and the dead. (Apostles’ Creed)
Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
We believe that your kingdom shall have no end. (Nicene Creed)
Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
We believe that you are our only hope.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
Let us pray.
ALL: Lord, make us instruments of your peace:
where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. (Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, adapted)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Gloria Patri)
We humbly ask you, O Father, to look mercifully upon our infirmities; and, for the glory of your name, turn from us all those evils that we most righteously have deserved; and grant that in all our troubles we may put our whole trust and confidence in your mercy, and evermore serve you in holiness and pureness of living, to your honor and glory, through our only Mediator and Advocate, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP)
The grace of our Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. (2 Cor. 13:14)
