Prayer Books for Daily Use
- Modern/Ecumenical: Phyllis Tickle, The Divine Hours (Volume 1): Prayers for Summertime (2006); The Divine Hours (Volume 2): Prayers for Autumn and Wintertime (2006); The Divine Hours (Volume 3): Prayers for Springtime (2006). The easiest prayer book to start using now. The books are thick because they spell out all of the prayers and readings so that you don’t have to flip around.
- Modern/Reformed: Jonathan Gibson, Be Thou My Vision: A Liturgy for Daily Worship (Crossway, 2021);O Sacred Head, Now Wounded: A Liturgy for Daily Worship from Pascha to Pentecost (Crossway, 2024). These are a helpful starting place for those who are unaccustomed to praying the daily office. They are not traditional prayer books in that they provide for only one time of prayer each day, rather than following the historic prayer hours.
- Protestant/Anglican: The 1662 Book of Common Prayer, International Edition (IVP Academic, 2021). The foundation of the Anglican and Methodist prayer tradition.
- Eastern Orthodox: A Manual of Eastern Orthodox Prayers (SVS Press).
- Roman Catholic: The Liturgy of the Hours. Skip the Marian prayers and it’s mostly just Scripture and great prayers and hymns of the church.
- Roman Catholic: The Glenstal Book of Prayer.
- The Order of Saint Luke, A Lukan Book of Hours: Basic Forms of the Daily Office (2015).
