The Ordination of Deacons

THE PRESENTATION

Brothers and sisters, on this day we intend, God willing, to ordain [Names] as deacons. But if there is anyone who knows any just reason why any of them should not be admitted to that office, let him come forth in the name of God, and show what the crime or impediment is.

If any just reason is objected, the Minister ceases from ordaining that person, until such time as the accused party is found clear of that crime or impediment. Then, prayer may be made by the whole congregation, followed by the Collect below.

PRAYER FOR THE CANDIDATES

Almighty God, by your divine providence you have appointed various orders of ministers in your Church, and inspired your apostles to choose into the order of Deacons the first martyr Saint Stephen, with others. Mercifully behold these your servants now called to the same office and administration. Replenish them with the truth of your doctrine, and adorn them with innocence of life, that both by word and good example they may faithfully serve you in this office, to the glory of your name, and the edification of your Church; through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and with the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

THE LESSONS

Then 1 Timothy 3:8–13 and Luke 12:35–40 are read. Other suitable passages include Jeremiah 1:4–10, Psalm 119:1–8, Mark 10:35–45, and Acts 6:1–7. Alternatively, the Gospel may be read after the consecration by a newly ordained Deacon.

THE EXAMINATION

Then, the Candidates are examined in the presence of the People.

Do you think in your heart that you are truly called, according to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the Order of Deacons?

I believe so.

Will you gladly and willingly take up this charge to assist the Elders as they have need, and to search for the sick, poor, and helpless, that they may be vivified and relieved?

I will, the Lord being my helper.

Will you be diligent to frame and fashion your own lives, and the lives of your families, according to the doctrine of Christ; and to make both yourselves and them, as much as lies within you, wholesome examples of the flock of Christ?

I will, the Lord being my helper.

Will you reverently obey those ministers who have charge and authority over you, following with a glad mind and a good will their godly admonitions, and submitting yourselves to their godly judgments?

I will, the Lord being my helper.

THE CONSECRATION

Then the Minister, laying his hands upon the head of each one of them, says,

Take authority to execute the office of a Deacon in the Church of God; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE NEWLY ORDAINED

Almighty God, you are the giver of all good things, and of your great goodness you have graciously granted to accept and take these your servants into the office of Deacons in your Church. Make them modest, humble, and constant in their ministry, and give them a ready will to observe all spiritual discipline; that they, having always the testimony of a good conscience, and continuing ever stable and strong in your Son, may behave themselves well in this office; through our Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and honor, world without end. Amen.
